Michelle at the gates of Graceland
In Memphis, we visited the infamous Lorraine Hotel, site of Martin Luther King's assassination and now location of the National Civil Rights Museum. Then to Graceland, the legendary home of Elvis Presley.
In New Orleans, we visited Bourbon Street and the French Quarter, but also the lower ninth ward, which had been detroyed four years earlier during Hurricane Katrina. Nearly 1,400 lives were lost when the levee system was inundated and gave way, flooding the entire region. Efforts were being made to rebuild from the tragedy ... and New Orleans was desperate for tourists. We stopped to support the area as well as learn more about the disaster. Things were moving forward, but very slowly.
From there, we drove along the gulf coast to our home on St. Armands Circle, Sarasota, Florida.
